What the figure measures
An earbud playtime figure is a system total: what the two buds hold, plus everything the case can put back into them before the case itself needs a cable. It is one number describing two very different things.
The buds are the half you experience. They hold a small cell each, and they are what runs out in the middle of a call. The case is a battery bank that happens to be shaped like a container.
Every listing on this site states the total and none states the split, which means the figure you compare across brands is mostly a statement about case size.
What shortens it
- Volume. A driver is the load, and a louder load is a shorter run.
- Noise canceling where the product has it, since the feature runs mics and processing continuously.
- Taking calls rather than listening, which adds the mic array and more radio traffic.
- A weak or intermittent connection, which makes the radio work harder to hold the link.
- Case age, because the case is the part doing the most charge cycles by a wide margin.
What the listing does not say
- How much of the total sits in the buds and how much in the case.
- What volume the figure assumes.
- Whether the stated figure was produced with noise canceling on or off, on the listings that state the feature.
And the fee side
No earbud listing in this catalog names a fee, a trial or a membership. Four name an app, generally for equalizer presets, which is a dependency rather than a cost.
