The marked point is the only place on the body this page covers. Everything on it — fit, obstruction, sensors, limits — is about that one location.

The wrist is the default answer to the question of where a wearable goes, and it holds more of this catalog than any other place on the body. It is also the worst-behaved place on the body: the wrist moves constantly, changes size through the day, and sits in a joint that any strap has to work around rather than through.

Everything else about a wrist device follows from that. The strap decides comfort, the strap decides whether a sensor is against skin, and the strap decides whether you keep wearing the thing after week three. None of these listings has much to say about the strap.

How it sits

A strap has to be tight enough that the back of the case stays against skin and loose enough that you forget it is there. Those two requirements fight, and every complaint about a wrist device eventually traces back to that fight.

Wrist circumference changes across a day and across a season. A strap set once in the morning is a different strap by evening, which is why several listings here state two band sizes in the box.

A case with a flat back on a wrist that is not flat leaves a gap on one side. That gap is where sensors stop reading and where skin gets irritated.

What gets in the way

  1. Sleeve cuffs, which push a case up the arm into the softer part of the wrist.
  2. Tattoos, scars and hair, all of which sit between an optical sensor and what it is pointed at.
  3. Wearing it over a bony wrist, where the case rocks rather than rests.
  4. Sweat under a sealed case back, which is the single most common reason people take one off and do not put it back on.

How these listings talk about sensors

These listings state heart rate monitors, SpO2 monitoring, sleep tracking, sleep scores, readiness, stress management, energy scores and Body Battery. Every one of those is the manufacturer naming a feature of their product.
